Revitalizing a "Tired" Flag Pole
On a hot Saturday morning, June 19, 1999,
members of Marian Assembly #1833 of Rensselaer,
Indiana met at Mt. Calvary Cemetery to revitalize
the flag pole. The flag pole has been an eyesore for
several years as rust had taken its toll on the once
shiny metal.
Sir Knight Harvey W. Wood PFN sent cards to
the membership asking them to help by bringing
paint brushes, rags, wire brushes, etc. Sir Knight
Homer P. Lakin provided the generator, cutter, and
bolts. Sir Knight Joseph A. Lane PFN provided the
bracket which would be used once the flag pole was
cut. Sir Knight William E. Haworth provided
additional bolts.
The pictures which follow show the work in
various stages, as well as before and after pictures.
First Things First. Sir Knights Harvey Wood and Bill Haworth
enjoy a cup of coffee with Lady Joyce I. Lane.
Sir Knight Joe Lane cleans out some weeds from behind the flag
pole.

Haworth, Harvey Wood, Henry Hubeny and Bill Snyder ready to start this
year's project.
Hold on Boys! Getting the generator started.
Homer Lakin starts the cutting process. Father Phil Gilbert and
Harvey Wood make sure he is doing it right.
Everyone helps as the last bit of pipe is cut.
Easy does it.
Homer drills holes for the bolts. Joe Lane and Steve Lane check
out the progress.
Checking to see if the hinge will work.
Making sure the bolts will line up.
Steve Lane and Bill Haworth paint the lower part of the flag
pole.
Bill Snyder paints the middle portion.
Father Phil Gilbert gets to paint the top. (How
appropriate!)
Steve Lane and Harvey Wood touch up the missed spots.
May still be wet but let's get ready to raise the flag
pole.
Everybody pull.....it can't be that heavy.
We're about to get it upright.
Quick, get the bolts tightened in place.
The finished product with Sir Knights Homer Lakin, Father Phil
Gilbert, Joe Lane, Steve Lane, Harvey Wood, Bill Haworth, Henry Hubeny and
Bill Snyder.
Father Phil Gilbert gives his blessing as we end the project
with a prayer.
